American Bald Eagles Information

The name of the species comes from an old English word that meant "white," but not "hairless," as some people may mistakenly think. The scientific name of the species is Haliaeetus leucocephalus. It is considered threatened and cannot be captured, kept, traded, etc. without permission.

The American Bald Eagle is found on most of North America including Mexico and Canada. In fact, there was a distinction between the two subspecies: the Northern and the Southern Bald Eagle. Nowadays, however, the habitation of the both subspecies is so overlapping that the distinction is minimal.

American Bald Eagles Information - Description

American Bald Eagle females are usually larger than males, which is a common feature in predator birds. A female is about 35-37 inches at length and her wingspread is about 79-90 inches. The body length of a male American Bald Eagle is from 30 to 34 inches, whereas the wingspread is from 72 to 85 inches. It is estimated that the birds that are traditionally referred to as Northern American Bald Eagles are larger than their southern relatives and may weigh from 10 to 14 pounds.
