Males generally measure 3 feet from head to tail, and weigh 7 to 10 pounds. Females are larger, weighing about 14 pounds and having a wingspan of up to 8 feet. The head and tail feathers are white, however, they get white only after the bird has reached 4 or 5 years old. The birds are believed to live 30 years or longer in the wild.

Haliaeetus leucocephalus is the national bird of America. This bird is found over most of North America, from Alaska and Canada to northern Mexico. The bird is listed endangered and threatened in some states. In the 18th century, there were about 50,000 nesting birds of this species on the territory of modern USA. Their populations declined drastically because of habitat destruction, excessive hunting, human encroachment and contamination of food source with DDT and other pesticides. Nowadays, thanks to conservation efforts, the population of these predators has recovered, but they still require protection and should not be disturbed. The reproductive rate of this species is very low, because these birds reach maturity at 4-5 years and normally have a single chick in the nest.
